The brewery collective (øllauget)
Do you want to be part of a community where we brew exciting beers, share lives, talk about everything between heaven and earth, and have occasional beer tastings in the presence of God?
What is the beer guild about, and is there room for me?
The beer garden is not only about brewing beer, but also about having a Christian community with each other, where we can share thoughts and lives with each other, no matter how big or small. We always have room for more people who want to try their hand at beer brewing, so if that could be something for you. Then you are welcome to come by when we brew or bottle beer. You can also contact our brewmaster Jan Kaas at: kaasjan@gmail.com for more information.
The history of the brewery collective
In 2013, a few of us thought it would be fun to have a beer guild in the church and equipment to brew beer. We made the first brews using some equipment borrowed from a colleague of one of the members of the congregation. The equipment consisted of a large pot with a tap, a gas burner plus loose parts, and we set it up in the church's back kitchen. The first brew was a great success, and we were both happy and a little proud. We later realized that we had made many mistakes along the way in the process, so it was probably more luck than intelligence that it was so successful! Thus encouraged, we continued brewing, but it quickly became clear to us that gas was not the way forward - we wanted a brewing system that could run on electricity, and it also had to have a certain capacity. On the internet, we found a "do-it-yourself" brewing system with detailed instructions.
All components could be purchased ready to assemble in the USA, but it was very expensive, so we decided to build it ourselves. We put together a shopping list, and then we were ready to go shopping. We just needed some money to buy it! We solved that by selling cooperative certificates in "Bryggeriet Julius" to interested parties inside and outside the congregation. When the financing was in place, we started purchasing all the components. Some were purchased in Denmark, and what was too expensive in Denmark, the Lund family brought home from the USA. When everything was purchased, we started assembling the system with Jesper Mølgaard as the man in charge. The system could not be located in the back kitchen, so we were lucky to be allowed to stay in LejerBo at Skotland's Plads, where one of the congregation members lived. There we brewed beer and talked about everything between heaven and earth.
In 2018, the brewery was asked to find another place to be, and in connection with the renovation of Købnerhus, we were allowed to set up in the church's back kitchen again, where we started at the time. Unfortunately, it took a long time to get the kitchen set up, and then Covid-19 hit us, and everything came to a standstill! Fortunately, that is now a past chapter, and the brewery has been given a permanent place in the kitchen, and several brews have already been brewed at the facility, ranging from blond ale, Belgian Dubbel to New England IPA and stout. What they all have in common is that they have quickly been allocated to ourselves and all the beer-loving congregation members.
A date has not been agreed for when we will meet next, but keep an eye on the newsletter and on the website under "events", where it will be announced.
